Bright by Text is a 501c(3) working with over 100 partners in all 50 states that support more than 85,000 caregivers on their parenting journey. Our goal is to make the most of everyday interactions between parent and child through nudges via text. Our service delivers actionable information from trusted early childhood experts to parents and caregivers of young children — from prenatal to age eight — to support healthy child development and build strong, resilient families. Available in English and Spanish, our developmental tips are delivered based on the due date or age of each child, and community organizations share information about local resources and events.

Job Description
Bright by Text is seeking a Director of Business Development to lead sales to meet both scaling and revenue goals. You will be the external face and key ambassador for the Bright by Text brand and mission to external prospects.
You will work closely with the leadership team to build relationships, cultivate leads, close sales, and monitor customer satisfaction. You will also coordinate with the leadership team to ensure sales and revenues are aligned with the Bright by Text’s strategic plan.
Responsibilities include identifying, developing, cultivating, and securing partnerships with early childhood organizations, schools, healthcare sectors, corporations, and government entities. Specifically you will:
  • Lead sales by managing and cultivating inbound sales and partnership inquiries
  • Proactively generate outbound sales and partnership leads
  • Build out the sales process and back-end sales systems
  • Close new partnerships and sales
  • Coordinate strategies with marketing and communication team
  • Create winning sales pitches for a diverse customer base
  • Contribute to development of Bright by Text’s key products by representing the voice of the customer
 
This Job is for You, if…
  • You love building relationships with people, are skilled at building allies amongst the people you meet, and recognize the importance of planting and watering the seeds of new relationships. Most importantly, you are capable of taking the relationships cultivated to closed sales.
  • You started out as a one-person sales-team for a startup and/or you have worked for a fast-growing social enterprise non-profit. Then you went on to build upon that success to create a sales/business development team around you. You can speak to how you, specifically, have cultivated leads, built trust, closed deals, codified processes, and trained others to do the same. We’re looking for someone who has been an entrepreneurial, revenue-focused leader of an emerging organization that has helped them make a major leap to a new level of organizational size and impact.
  • You have experience in consultative selling. Bright by Text has found success in selling its current products, but there is still further product development to go, and you will help us further define and develop our product through the insights you gain from speaking with prospects and customers.This means we’re looking for someone who has had experience refining, developing, prototyping, and testing products in the market.
  • You have a track record of building out sales processes and systems. You have built and refined sales processes based on your own experience taking products to market. You understand the boring, methodical organization and systems and tracking needed to do sales well and you can demonstrate how you’ve invested the time and effort to build this successful “back-office.”
  • You have experience in a leadership capacity in a fast-growing, quickly-evolving organization. You have led and managed through uncertainty and you are comfortable with risk-taking.
  • You are a builder and an owner. We’re not just looking for a delegator, an overseer, a finger-pointer. We’re looking for someone who wants their fingerprints all over the future trajectory of our organization by rolling up their sleeves, doing the work, thinking strategically, and setting up the processes, infrastructure, and systems to take Bright by Text to the next level. This means that you’re constantly shifting altitudes between designing and doing, between strategizing and operating.
  • You are an exceptional listener and also aren’t afraid to speak the truth. 
  • You are both a doer and a strategist. You recognize that business development and sales requires day-in/day-out methodical emailing and follow-up, and you recognize the importance of seeing the macro-trends in the space, of understanding the underlying psychology and pain-points of prospective customers.
  • You understand the importance of learning and listening as you step into this new role, but you also recognize that you bring a lot to the table and are confident that you can help take the organization to the next level.

  • If you thrive in fully-established systems and completely-built products.
  • If you’ve been part of a much larger sales team and loved being handed a list of leads to cultivate. 
  • If you are most comfortable in a well-established organization and only need to deliver on pre-set sales goals.

Not right away, but it’s possible we will grow the sales-team in the future. There isn’t a timeline for this yet.
  • What does my career progression look like?
We’re a fast-growing and evolving organization, which means there isn’t a tried-and-true career progression track. You will be one of the major catalysts in taking Bright by Text to the next level of impact, influence, and size.
  • Wait: aren’t you a non-profit? Will I be doing sales or fundraising?
Yes, we are a non-profit, but we realize that whether our prospect is using philanthropic dollars or non-philanthropic dollars, we are selling the product of impact to them. We transact dollars for impact, and that impact needs to be productized and defined so people understand the impact return on their financial capital. This means you might be selling to other nonprofits, school systems, governmental agencies, hospitals and wide variety of other early childhood collaborators. The target audience and sales processes look different, but the suite of products are similar.

This is a new role commensurate with our growth. Our initial customer traction has come through our leadership team. It is time to bring in a dedicated team member with the experience and passion to take us to the next level.  
 
The Details
  • Location: Virtual. Our “headquarters” is in Denver, CO. Since COVID-19 we have gone 100% virtual - we even gave up the lease on our office space.  
  • Compensation: Commensurate with experience (bonus potential based upon successful deliverables)
